While in the hospital, all premature babies are immunized at their chronological age, i.e., on the same schedule as that for full-term babies. Depending on the infant’s age, some immunizations are given to the baby while still in the hospital. All immunizations given are documented on an immunization record card. This card is given to parents prior to the baby’s discharge. To continue recording immunizations and to make certain the immunizations are up to date, always take this card to your pediatrician each time you visit.

Synagis is recommended for preemies discharged home between early fall and late spring. This vaccine protects babies against Respiratory Syncitial Virus (RSV). All premature infants born before 32 weeks gestation and those born between 32-35 weeks gestation with certain risk factors (such as chronic lung disease), will receive their first vaccination prior to the discharge home. Follow up vaccinations are administered monthly at the pediatrician’s office until the end of the RSV season.

The 2- months immunizations include injections of:

• DTaP vaccine - protects against Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis
• Hepatitis B vaccine - protects against Hepatitis B
• Polio vaccine - protects against Poliomyelitis
• Hib vaccine - protects against Haemophilus influenzae B
• Pneumococcal vaccine – protects against pneumococcus bacteria that can cause life-threatening blood infection and meningitis
